Mudita

This morning as I waited to cross the street, I moved away from the puddle along the curb, in case a car chose to deliberately drive through it in order to spray me. I pondered schadenfreude, and it made me sad to think that I didn't know a word that meant its opposite, in the sense of "taking delight in the joy of others".

Fortunately, there is a Buddhist word for the concept: mudita. I wish it were more common, but I suppose it isn't as inherently interesting.

There's "compersion", but that's somewhat more specific.

Why, yes it is. I wasn't familiar with that word. That wasn't really what I was looking for. :)

Huh, didn't know of that word, oddly enough.

And here I am thinking of Pinky and the Brain. In the episode called "Broadway Malady," Pinky produces a new musical called Mice (yes, a spoof on Cats), while Brain does his own musical, called Angst--The Musical. :-)

The big hit of Brain's musical is his song called "The Schadenfreude Polka."

This is a little like the conversation we just had over at Monte Cook's blog. The Third Thing that People Want in Hindu philosophy is Duty, and "taking delight in the joy of others" is a huge part of that.
