Kosher Pork? Un-Kosher Fish?
In my recent post on vat-grown meat I totally missed the religious ramifications. I wonder how experts on kashrut would interpret Leviticus 11 for such things? Pork would probably still be out, since the source of the meat still doesn't chew a cud, but for that reason vat-grown beef could be unkosher too. Likewise, they may forbid vat-grown fish because, like shellfish, it has no scales or fins. Could a Hindu or Buddhist eat vat-grown meat without violating ahimsa? I wonder.

very good question.

I would say that the Hindu or Buddhist would have an easier time with the justification, but those who follow the kosher laws would have issues with it.

I'd love to see some vegan commentary on it (heck, even just straight vegetarian) -I'm thinking vegans abhor gmo foods as it is (it seems to me)
so I figured they would be opposed to the whole fakeness of this food source as well.

I, for one, reserve judgment on our soylent green serving overlords though, for now.

Given that some Jewish authorities have issues with gelatin (because it's often made from animal bones that weren't kosher to begin with), I'd say it would be a thorny question.

It might come down to, Did the original cells for this culture come from a kosher animal?

There is a Harry Turtledove SF short story which explores the question of GM Pigs and whether or not the pork from it is kosher. In the story, a pig which chews its cud (useful for developing countries) is developed.

The question becomes whether or not its kosher. A Rabbi is asked to adjundicate and eventually samples the meat.

Ha! I should have known someone would think of that story before I did. :)
