It's What's for Dinner
Scientists are getting closer and closer to producing vat-grown meats that were never part of an actual animal. I think this is a great idea, but I really have to wonder what it will taste like. I also wonder what PETA thinks (I don't care: I'm just curious).

I'm very interested in finding out what the nutrient comparisons are going to be like. For example, what kind of cholesterol levels will in vitro meat have? If it's as bad as pork or beef, there isn't much benefit for me to eat it. If it's more in line with poultry, though, I'm definitely interested.

I agree that this is a wonderful idea, although I do fear for the effect it will have on individual people who make a living selling animals for slaughter. I imagine that there will always be a market for small quantities of in vivo meats, so the smaller farms will probably not be completely wiped out, but I'm sure they will feel some kind of impact in the long run.

The impact on global food production industry will be huge, and will result in some rather scary shifts as this takes off. (And I truly do believe that it will take off.)

The food production industry (having just gotten out of it) is absolutely immense, and it has a large marketing arm which will probably be used extensively to fight against this, but I don't know how well it will do. It's going to be interesting to watch...

There's nothing so good that it's not bad for someone. Consider all the people in the petroleum industry that we desperately _need_ to become unemployed.

Hey! I posted about this on Jake's blog a year or so ago. I'm very glad to see progress continuing. While I am not vegan, I sympathize greatly with those who'd like to see animals dying for our food stop.

It's not the killing of animals for food that bothers me (if we're not supposed to eat them, why are they made of meat?). It's the conditions under which many of them live _before_ we kill them that's really sad. Besides, raising a whole animal just to get its muscle tissue is inefficient. There are a lot of reasons to pursue this, moral and practical both.
