Fitts' Law
What is Fitts' Law, and why should software designers be more aware of it?

Fitts' Law is used to model the act of pointing, both in the real world, for example, with a hand or finger and on computers, for example, with a mouse. (Wikipedia)

As such, it has the following implications:
  • Targets to be acquired by a mouse should be large enough to select easily (not like the tiny resize handles in Microsoft Paint).
  • Frequently-used targets are easier to acquire if they are placed at the edge of the screen, or, even better, in the corner.
  • Pop-menus are better than pull-down menus.
  • Pie menus are better than linear menus. (I'm just now starting to discover apps with pie menus: I predict that you will see more of these.)
